Third suspect freed in Politkovskaya case
Tamerlan Makhmudov, the third of four brothers implicated in the assassination of Anna Politkovskaya, has been released on parole by the Russian courts. Politkovskaya, a journalist famous for her outspoken criticism of Kremlin policy, especially in the Northern Caucasus, was assassinated on 7 October 2006. According to Reporters Without Borders, Tamerlan Mahkmudov was judged to have had a “secondary role” in the murder. Six suspects now remain in detention, including the fourth Mahkmudov brother, the alleged murderer.
