Final election results in Kosovo confirm Thaçi's victory, but PM might be unable to form a government

NEWS IN BRIEF. Opposition parties insist they should now govern the country

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi's party was confirmed as the winner of the legislative election held three weeks ago. But that victory could be not enough for Thaçi to continue ruling the Balkan country. According to the Kosovo Central Election Commission, Thaçi's Democratic Party (PDK, centre-right) won 37 out of 120 seats in the Kosovo Assembly. Main opposition party Democratic League (LDK, centre-right) came in second place, securing 30 seats. Vetëvendosje (centre-left) obtained 16 AMs, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK, centre-right) 11, and the Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA, centre-right) 6. The remaining 20 seats are granted to non-Albanian parties, 9 of which were won by the Serbian List.

The debate is now over who should receive the mandate to form a government. Thaci argues that, according to the Constitution, only the winning party should have that right. But the LDK, AAK and NISMA, with Vetëvendosje's support, have reached an agreement to form a coalition government. Those four parties enjoy an absolute majority in Parliament, and therefore they argue that the mandate should be handed to them. President of Kosovo Atifete Jahjaga has asked the Constitutional Court to rule on who has the right to form a government.
