"There are many cases of violation of rights of ethnic minorities in the European Union, as the Italian example shows". According to the Friulian online journal Lenghe.net, member of the Liberal Democrat Party of Slovenia Jelko Kacin, has expressed unease to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education and Culture with the resignation of Trieste's Slovensko Stalno Gledalisce (Slovenian Stabile Theater) board. The managers of the only non-Italian public theater in Italy resigned on September 28, right before the 2009-2010 season started, because they could not assume the cost of the staff's wages.

Kacin blamed Rome for the financial shortage and said that the Italian administration "does not satisfy the standard financial aid needed" and that "obstacles met by the theater are a clear example of active assimilation of a minority".
