Valencian Country commemorates April 25 with several pro-independence events

NEWS IN BRIEF. 5,000 people demonstrate in Valencia with the motto 'Take the streets for the freedom of the Catalan Countries.'

The Catalan leftist pro-independence movement had called on a demonstration on April 25 to commemorate the defeat in the battle of Almansa. As a result of the battle, the Kingdom of Valencia was finally seized by the Bourbon Spanish monarchy. With the motto "Take the streets for the freedom of the Catalan Countries", 5,000 people gathered to join the march, which was organized mainly by CAJEI (Youth Left-wing Pro-Independence Assemblies Coordinator), Endavant (Socialist Organisation for National Liberation), Maulets (pro-independence revolutionary Youth), SEPC (Student trade union), Alerta Solidària (Anti-repression committee) and COS (workers trade union).

Demonstrations were also attended in Torrent and in Xàtiva, where the Socialist Party and the Nationalist Bloc paid tribute to Maulets, the Valencian fighters who opposed Philip V supporters.

In present day Valencia, the saying 'Quan el mal ve d'Almansa, a tots alcança' ("Evil tidings spare no one when they come from Almansa," or, more literally, "When the wrong comes from Almansa, it reaches everybody" ) still recalls the defeat.
