A Tuareg faction calls for peace talks with the government of Niger

The Niger Patriotic Front (FPN) has split from the main Tuareg armed group and asks for dialogue to end the conflict · Tuaregs from Niger fight for political and economical autonomy of their territories · More than 600 Tuareg rebels form Mali laid down arms a few weeks ago in accordance with a peace agreement with the government.

Conflict between Tuareg Berbers and the Government of Niger could enter a new stage after a splinter group from MNJ (Niger Movement for Justice), the main rebel organization in the country, was formed. The new group, called Niger Patriotic Front (FPN), has said that their aim is to start peace talks with the government in order to put an end to the conflict. According to Reuters, the FPN defines itself as "an armed struggle organisation that wants to return to peace in Niger and favours dialogue".

Since the conflict intensified in 2007, the Niger government has refused to negotiate with the Tuareg rebel groups, to which it describes as bandits and smugglers. The MNJ claims self-government for the northern regions, inhabited by a Tuareg majority and other peoples such as Hausas, Fulanis and Songhai Djermas, among others. It also wants the profits deriving from the exploitation of uranium to contribute to developing the northern areas, which are deeply impoverished.

Encouraging scenario in Mali
The attitude of the government of Niger contrasts with that of the neighboring Mali, where there is also an armed conflict with Tuareg rebels. More than 600 Tuareg Berber fighters laid down their arms three weeks ago as a peace process had started a few months before following Algeria's mediation. Magharebia reported last February that the settlement includes steps to be fulfilled in the following months, such as "the return by families displaced by the conflict to their homes, and the release of prisoners of war detained by each side".
