Catalan organizations present 71,000 signatures in favor of a referendum for self-determination

They call for the power to call for referendums to be transferred to the Catalan Government, a right currently reserved for the Spanish Government · Spokeswomen from the Plataforma pel Dret de Decidir (PDD, Platform for the Right to Decide) and Sobirania i Progrés (Sovereignty and Progress) have met with the president of the Catalan Parliament

Two Catalan civic organizations, the Plataforma pel Dret de Decidir (PDD, Platform for the Right to Decide) and Sobirania i Progrés (SiP, Sovereignty and Progress), have brought to a conclusion the Decideixo Decidir! (I decide to decide!) campaign, which has been collecting signatures since April 23rd 2007 to call for the right to call referendums without Madrid's permission. More than 71,000 people have filled up the form to amend article 150.2 of the Spanish Constitution and demand the transferring of such power, which is reserved to the Spanish government.

The signatures were handed over during a meeting with Ernest Benach, President of the Parliament of Catalonia. The organizations asked the Parliament to present a draft bill in the Spanish Congress to make the transferring possible.

Elisenda Romeu (PDD) and Elisenda Paluzie (SiP), spokeswomen of the Decideixo Decidir! (I decide to decide!) campaign have asked the Catalan government to speed up the procedures to put the Catalan Popular Consultation Bill to the vote in the Parliament. The Catalan Ministry of Governance and Public Administration is currently drafting a bill on popular consultation. Elisenda Paluzié has said that the demands made by the organizations "go far beyond" the proposals of the Catalan Ministry, as the bill being drafted might include Madrid's authorization.
