The four languages of the Pyrenees could soon have a permanent working forum

NEWS IN BRIEF. Creation of a permanent working forum is one of the proposals to come out of the Sixteenth Congress of Pyrenean Languages.

On October 6-10, Pamplona played host to the Sixteenth Congress of Pyrenean Languages, which brought together the main academic institutions for the four languages spoken in the Pyrenees: the Royal Academy of the Basque Language (Euskaltzaindia), which is ninety years old this year, the Institute for Occitan Studies (Institut d'Estudis Occitans), the Institute for Catalan Studies (Institut d'Estudis Catalans) and the Academy of the Aragonese Language (Academia de l'Aragonés).

Lectures on various topics - including history, dialectology, literature and toponymy - were held over the five days of the conference. According to the Academy of the Aragonese Language, the four institutions "plan to set up a permanent social and working forum to co-ordinate" collaborative efforts to promote the four languages.
