Organizations ask for boost in Asturian-language broadcasts

NEWS IN BRIEF. Asturian-language programs do not exceed 5% of public TV broadcasts, group says

The Academy of the Asturian Language and 26 organizations, unions and foundations have asked the General Junta (Parliament) to boost broadcasts in Asturian and Galician-Asturian in Asturias' public broadcaster (RTPA). The organizations have made the request once parliamentary work has started over a bill aimed at restructuring the public sector, which will mainly have an impact on RTPA.

The organizations say that radio and TV public channels "should help the process of social normalization of Asturian and Galician-Asturian, guaranteeing public access to contents" in those languages "and promoting an audiovisual industry that ensures the production of such contents".

According to data by the Board for the Defence of the Asturian Language, Asturian-language programs do not exceed 5% of the public TV broadcasts. The figure is even lower (2%) for radio broadcasts. This happens despite the fact that the Statute of Autonomy of Asturias reads that Asturian shall "enjoy protection" and that "its use, dissemination in the media and teaching shall be promoted".
