FIFA admits Kosovo, Gibraltar as newest members
Federation of Jersey to seek UEFA membership
Congress delegates followed the recommendation made earlier by the FIFA Council, which had supported the admission of the two countries. Kosovo received 141 votes for and 23 against. Gibraltar had the support of 172 federations and the rejection of 12.
The decision implies that Kosovo and Gibraltar teams will be allowed to participate in the qualifying rounds for the 2018 World Cup to be held in Russia.
Both federations had previously been accepted by the governing body of European football, UEFA.
The Federation of Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, recently said it will be seeking UEFA membership, just like Gibraltar had done.
The Channel Islands are Crown dependencies, and they are not a part of the UK.
