Seeking to further its goal of full independence, the Greenlandic government has opened a permanent diplomatic representation office in Washington. According to head of the delegation Inuuteq Hold Olsen, on the road to independence, "it's important that we also have much closer relations with our neighbours to the west, meaning the United States as well as Canada."

The office was opened in September by the then Prime Minister of Greenland, Aleqa Hammond, who later resigned. At the opening ceremony, Hammond stressed the importance for Greenland to follow its own path regarding foreign relations.
