Demonstration for the reunification of Brittany called in Nantes

Pro-Breton groups say opportunity open by upcoming reorganization of France's regional map should be seized · Historically Breton department of Loire Atlantique is currently included into Pays de la Loire region

Bretagne Réunie and 44=Breizh groups are calling Bretons to demonstrate in order to excert pressure the French Government for the reunification of Brittany. Under the slogan "Neither the status quo nor the Great West", the two groups say that current prospects for reunification should be seized so that the dossier "is not again closed or ignored for the umpteenth time". The demonstration will take place in Nantes (Brittany's historical capital city, now included within the Pays de la Loire region) on April 19th.

The announcement comes after French President Francois Hollande has re-taken a project by his predecessor in office Nicolas Sarkozy to reorganize France's regional map. Hollande argues that the number of regions should be reduced to 15 or so. This could have an effect on Brittany. On the one hand, it could open the door to reunification: Nantes' department of Loire Atlantique could join Brittany into one single region. But on the other hand, the number of current regions could also be reduced by merging the existing regions of Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Poitou-Charentes into a new, Great West region.

The Breton movement is opposed to both the current situation and to the dissolution of Brittany into a larger conglomerate, as the Great West would be. Until now, the Great West works as a constituency for European elections.

In 2008, some 10,000 people -according to the organization- demonstrated in Nantes calling for the reunification of Brittany. In later years other concentrations have been held with the same purpose.
