Pro-Breton language Ar Redadeg relay race is today beginning near the historic capital of Brittany, Nantes. Race organizers say they want to "symbolize the transmission of a living, creative and dynamic Breton language." The event, which enters its fifth edition now, is also aimed at helping raise funds for Breton language projects and activities.

The race has been held every two years since 2008. This year's Ar Redadeg begins in Sant-Ervlan (Saint Herblain) and will be ending on May 7th in Lokoal-Mendon (Locoal-Mendon). Over nine days, and with no night stops, Ar Redadeg will be running across all five Breton departments, including the Loire Atlantique department, which officially belongs to the Pays de la Loire region.

In order to raise funds for Breton language projects, Ar Redadeg kilometers are sold. For 100 euros, individuals and associations can buy one. Municipalities and companies are asked 200 euros per kilometre. More than 1,600 kilometres have been sold in 2016 -almost the full tour.

Ar Redadeg's most recent edition, held in 2014, raised 165,000 euros. 125,000 were allocated to help Diwan Breton-medium schools and to fund theatre, adult education and entertainment activities. The remaining 40,000 euros were used to for the 2016 race preparations.
