Degree of autonomy
In 1991 the Region of Corsica became the Territorial Collectivity of Corsica, adopting a specific statute within the French Republic. Corsica gained a certain degree of political and administrative autonomy and became the most decentralized region of France, with a unique system within the French state that is similar to other decentralized states in Europe.

Comments
The armed organization Fronte di Liberazione Naziunale di a Corsica (FLNC, National Front for the Liberation of Corsica), active since 1976, calls for an independent Corsica and for Corsican political prisoners to be transferred from the continent to the island. In the past, there have been several other armed movements, but most of these have since dissolved.
