While Sinn Féin is calling for justice and policing powers to be transferred to Belfast, the unionists say that Northern Ireland is not ready. Another period of political instability may be around the corner, especially after Ian Paisley’s announcement that he will be stepping down as DUP leader.

    8,000 euro fine for displaying ‘Freedom for Kurdistan’ banner in Galicia

    A Galician organization will face a court hearing, accused of displaying a pro-Kurdish banner during a football match between Celta de Vigo and Fenerbahçe of Istanbul. Proceedings were initiated at the request of the Turkish police, who were in the stadium at the time. In Turkey, it is an offence merely to mention the word ‘Kurdistan’.

    ‘Right to decide’ campaign to mobilize separatist activism in the Catalan Countries

    Over 3,000 volunteers from La Plataforma pel Dret de Decidir (PDD), or Platform for the Right to Decide, will collect signatures on the day of the Spanish general elections in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, as well as in cities around the world. The aim is to show the level of public support for Catalan institutions being allowed to call legally binding referendums of their own.

    An association of European lawyers expresses concern over the banning of Basque parties

    The report drafted by the European Association of Lawyers for Democracy and World Human Rights (ELDH) and published in the Gara newspaper also questions the notion of “support for a terrorist organization”, which the Spanish Audiencia Nacional used during the so-called 18/98 trial.
