A poll entrusted to Noxa Institute by La Vanguardia newspaper shows an advance of pro-independence sentiment in the Principality of Catalonia, reaching an historic record of 37% compared to 41% of unionists · In 2008 a poll made by the same institute confirmed a breach of 14% between the two political stances.
Support for independence is growing while refusal is diminishing. This is the outcome of a new poll published by La Vanguardia newspaper, which confirms the results of similar surveys made lately. According to Noxa Institute's poll, Catalans in favour of independence amount to 37%, while detractors reach 41%.
La Vanguardia newspaper stresses that these are the best results the pro-independence movement has had in the last 3 years. In November 2008 the gap between unionists and independence supporters was of 14% in favour of the union; but the distance has shrunken to only 4%.
According to political tendencies, the opinion poll shows that there's been a remarkable shift among labour voters (PSC, Socialist Party of Catalonia): only 22% of socialist supporters were backing independence 2 months ago, while now the percentage has increased to 35%.
Variations in other political parties are less significant. Among CiU voters (conservative Catalan nationalists) both independence supporters and detractors amount to 40%; ERC's (Catalan Republican Left, pro-independence social-democrats) pro-secession voters sum up 80%, while 4 out of 10 among ICV (eco-socialists) voters would agree to a free Catalan state, but 5 out of 10 would refuse it. To end with, only 10% of PP (conservative Spanish unionists) voters would support independence.
Other aspects considered in the survey are the support to popular consultations on the independence of Catalonia, which have been already held in hundreds of Catalan towns, or whether the perception of pro-independence sentiment is increasing. As regards the former, 54% backs the informal referendums, while 34% is against them. Finally, 48% thinks the pro-independence sentiment is growing, compared to a 20% who believes the contrary.
