Pro-independence Basque leftist parties made illegal

08/02/2008

The 'Audiencia Nacional', the court reserved for terrorist cases in the Spanish justice system, has banned the two parties that represent the pro-independence left, namely Basque Nationalist Action and the Basque Lands Communist Party.

As a result, pro-independence parties in the Basque Country will not be represented in the Spanish general elections, which will take place on 9 March 2008. Judge Baltasar Garzón ordered all BNA and BLCP activities to be suspended for three years. Their headquarters, offices and other establishments will be closed down, their bank accounts will be frozen, and they will be forbidden from taking part in the polls.

Earlier this week three members of BNA and three members BLPC were imprisoned, accused of collaborating with the armed group ETA.
