Non-binding online vote on Veneto independence under preparation

NEWS IN BRIEF. 2013 Plebiscite organization says vote is not meant to substitute an official one which should be called by the Regional Council

2013 Plebiscite organization is ready organize a non-binding, online vote on Veneto independence next 16th February. The organization has taken the decision in the light that Veneto Regional Council has not yet approved the call for an official, consultative referendum. 2013 Plebiscite has explained that voters will be able to cast their vote on Internet. For those who do not have access to Internet, the organization plans to install public computers so that any citizen can cast his or her vote.

The referendum question will be this one: "Do you want Veneto to become a sovereign, Federal Independent Republic?". Organizers say the vote is "complementary", and not "alternative", to the current process in which the Veneto Regional Council should decide if an official, albeit non-binding referendum should be held.

The Council convened in September in order to decide on the matter. However, no decision was made, and the final vote on the referendum was postponed.
