South Tyrol, Aosta Valley parties strong in Italian election

70% of Aosta and 60% of South Tyrol votes go to non state-wide Italian lists · Sardinian nationalism slightly increases its share of vote, gets 3.4% of the ballots · Veneto pro-independence parties fail to take advantage of Northern League decline

Italian parliamentary election has brought important news a the state level, such as the growth of Beppe Grillo's Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle, M5S) or the good performance of former PM Silvio Berlusconi's list. Still, there are other interesting news from Italy's stateless nations, with both new and old parties in Aosta Valley, South Tyrol, Sardinia and Veneto. This is a brief insight into their results.

Sardinia

Three different Sardinian only lists stood for election. Together, they have captured 3.4% of the Sardinian vote, which is more than 2.3% Sardinian lists got in 2008, but less than what Sardinian nationalist parties use to obtain in regional and provincial elections.

Out of the three, the Sardinian Action Party (Partito Sardo d'Azione, PSd'Az) has received the most votes, 2% of the total. The PSd'Az was proposing a reform on the statute of autonomy of Sardinia. Another two lists proposed an independence programme: Independence for Sardinia Sovereignty (ISS, 0.8% of the total vote) and European Movement Sardinian Rebirth (M.E.RI.S, 0.6%).

None of them has obtained any seat in the Italian Parliament.

Aosta Valley

Aosta autonomist parties have reached 70% of the vote, less than five years ago (77% then). Still, the top three lists in the election have been Aosta only, autonomist ones. The Union Valdôtaine (UV, 25.4% of the vote) has won the election in Aosta, albeit by a narrow margin over their leftist split-off, the Union Valdôtaine Progressiste (25.1%). Autonomie Liberté Participation Ecologie (ALPE) has placed itself third (19.8%).

UV has thus won Aosta's only seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

South Tyrol

Traditionally strong Popular Party of South Tyrol (SVP) has again been the party with the most votes: 44.2% of the provincial total. Thanks to this fact, SVP has won four seats in the Chamber and an extra one has gone to their allies, the Trentino Tyrolean Autonomist Party(PATT).

Secessionist, anti-immigration party The Libertarians (Die Freiheitlichen) has obtained its best result ever, with 15.9% of the vote. Though, they have won no seat in Parliament.

Veneto

None of the three Veneto pro-independence parties has won any seat in the Parliament. Taken together, those parties have got 2.3% of the vote in Veneto 1 constituency and 1.8% in Veneto 2. This is a slightly better result for Veneto pro-independence lists if compared to 2008, but still it is a poor result -specially if the decline in votes of the Northern League, from 25% to 10%, is taken into account.
