Galician re-integrationism takes part in a meeting with Portuguese language academies for the first time

Lusophone countries welcome the new Galician Academy of the Portuguese Language.

Date: From 04/16/2009 to 04/24/2009
Type: Language and culture

Re-integrationist approach to Galician language, namely the linguistic trend considering Galician and Portuguese as varieties of the same language, has been given a major boost on April 14 as it has participated, through the Galician Academy of the Portuguese Language (AGLP), in an inter-academy session alongside other Portuguese language academies: the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, the Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian Academy of Letters and the Bahia Academy of Letters. AGLP, set up in 2008, has taken part in a meeting with their counterparts on an equal footing for the first time ever.

The Galician Academy of the Portuguese Language is accountable for the re-integrationist standard Galician and is one of the movement's main organizations. It has marked April 14 as an "historical day in the civil Galician calendar". During the session, AGLP presented a Galician Lexicon to be integrated in the Common Orthographic Vocabulary approved by the rest of Portuguese language academies.
