Greek Cypriot government suspends military exercises on the island

Greek Cypriots hope that after their gesture of good will Turkish Cypriots will follow suit.

Date: From 10/01/2008 to 10/09/2008
Type: Politics and institutions

The BBC reports that Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, speaking before the Council of Europe on Tuesday, announced that the Greek Cypriots would be abolishing their annual military exercises as a first step towards "military de-escalation". He also said that Nicosia's old town should be fully demilitarized.

Christofias's latest proposals come as Greek and Turkish Cypriots take part in negotiations that, it is hoped, will put an end to the conflict that has divided the island for over thirty years and pave the way for reunification.
