35% of Catalans want independence according to new report

A report drafted by the Centre for Sovereignty Studies suggests support for independence has increased in the last eighteen years

Date: From 09/22/2008 to 09/24/2008
Type: Actions

The Centre for Sovereignty Studies (CES), which specializes in evaluating the cost to Catalonia of remaining part of Spain and putting forward arguments for independence, has released a document that analyzes twenty-one polls carried out since 1991. It concludes that 2,000,000 Catalans are today in favour of secession, with 2,750,000 (45% of the population) against independence, and 1,100,000 (20%) undecided or failing to respond to the question.

The preliminary results of the study - which will be released in its complete form soon - show that different sectors of society tend to have different stances on independence. 42.7% of those born in Catalonia support independence, while 68% of those born elsewhere in Spain are against. Support for independence also tends to increase with the level of education.

Results available on the CES website.
