‘Is the EU taking regional and marginalized languages seriously?’

EBLUL has organized a conference in Poland on linguistic policies in Europe.

Date: From 09/09/2008 to 09/12/2008
Type: Language and culture
Location: Gdansk, Poland

The current status of marginalized languages in Europe, new linguistic policies, and the role of grass-roots organizations: these are just some of the issues that will be discussed at a conference on "Linguistic policy and the regions of Europe". The conference has been organized by EBLUL (European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages) and will take place in Gdansk, Poland on September 11-13.

The conference is supported by the Autonomous Government of Pomerania, the province that contains the city of Gdansk, and the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association. Today, there are approximately 50,000 speakers of Kashubian, one of the languages traditionally spoken in Pomerania. Although the language has been in steady decline in recent years because of the dominance of Polish, the situation is now changing, due in part to the linguistic policy pursued by the Autonomous Government.
