Occitania
The political organization of Occitania, which historically covers most of the southern half of the French state, is extremely weak. Occitan nationalist parties do not have a homogeneous presence across the Occitan-speaking zone, and if they have any electoral support at all, it tends to be through coalitions formed with other parties.
The Partit de la Nacion Occitana (Party of the Occitan Nation), founded in 1959 in Nice, is the traditional party of Occitan nationalism and has a secessionist and Marxist approach. It has never had representation at the municipal or regional level and has not presented candidates for some years.
The Partit Occitan (Occitan Party), however, does have a number of municipal councillors. The Partit Occitan has an autonomist approach, is part of the European Free Alliance, and aims to raise “awareness of the Occitan people”.
